Vestiness.

This vest was another $5 TJMaxx find. I saw it on the clearance rack and thought, hey, this is that silly little vest all the teenyboppers are wearing. Then I tried it on. And...it was really cute. And flattering. So I brought it home.
But then, every time I tried to wear it, I got horrible 80's flashbacks and/or felt like I was posing as a teenager. Neither are good feelings, and I usually shoved it back into the closet. So today was a bit of a challenge to myself, to make this vest feel like me. Mixing it with my new favorite gray/purple/mustard scheme helped. :)

What do you think? How else do you lovely ladies out there style vests?

Sorry for the terrible picture quality - in real life this sweater is a very pretty fuschia color! See?

And the necklace is a very pretty green, like so:

Vest: TJMaxx
Sweater: Banana Republic outlet
Gray skirt: j.crew outlet
Flats: Target
Earrings and necklace: gifted
Watch: Target

  1. The vest doesn't look bad on you-- but I think I too have 80s flashbacks. God, I used to wear tapestry vests at one point.... with PINS. Oh dear. *shudder*

I think it the _entire_ outfit was more 80s-flashback it would work more...? Like with skinny jeans and a scarf?

I think it looks objectively good-- I commend you for "owning" it. I guess that I am just projecting too many of my own horrific awkward adolescent memories onto the vest.

    :)

  2. As you know, I love this vest on you. And I think you rock it.

If I had the vest, I too would take it out every day, put it on, hate it, and then stuff it back in the closet. I have a couple of those items, myself. I think it really is a big challenge to actually take those pieces out of hiding and wear them the way they were meant to be worn. You do it, and do it well. I love it with the non-matchy shoes!

  3. Nicola - I hear you. In elementary school I owned a long crochet vest with flowers that I thought was the pinnacle of style (it wasn't). So maybe I'm getting more like early-90's Blossom flashbacks.

I love the way vests look with jeans, but since this particular vest is actually a very dark denim, I'm afraid of the whole denim tuxedo thing. I like the pants and scarf idea though...

CoCo - thanks! I think that "the piece of clothing you can never bring yourself to actually wear for whatever reason" should be our next challenge! Though with a catchier name, obviously. ;)

  4. LOL! Blossom!!! EXACTLY. I immediately think of me wearing costume brooches pinned at the neck of silky button-up blouses... *ouch* The shame... the shame....

ANYWAY... I didn't realize the vest was denim... it looked black in the photo. I can see that being difficult with jeans. But if you rocked some boots-over-pants hipster look... maybe with black pants.... that's an option.

Also, I think the "no inhibitions" challenge would be excellent! I have this vintage orangey shirt from the 70s that i LOVE to look at... but when I put it on I feel like I am a muppet-kid on Sesame Street. (note: potential halloween costume). I also have some patterned tights that I am not sure I am bold and dashing enough to don.

  5. Nicola - I'm thinking black pants for the next vest outing.

And we totally need to pick a week for the No Fear challenge! The girl at oh honey. no (isn't that a great name?) did this challenge, and it was awesome.
