feeling better, but not quite cured

So, after a rather irritating bout with pneumonia and conjunctivitis, I'm back in the saddle (again). Today's plans were fairly basic. I wanted to get out of the house for the first time in days, but I didn't want to do anything too strenuous. I read on my friend A's facebook that she wanted a cannoli and, as I was feeling much better today, I responded with a longing, "yummm." Which meant, of course, that we went on a cannoli hunt!

We weren't successful in finding cannolis (YET), but we did speak with a dear friend who works in Boston about having her get some up to us this evening. Hey, tomorrow's my birthday, and I think birthday cannolis are in order.

We did get to go to my favorite soup place (Collins Bros.) and I picked up a quart of stuffed pepper soup. I believe A bought corn and bacon chowder. Delish. Then, it was off the the Salvation Army! I've been hankering for some new clothes, especially skirty dressy things, and I happened to luck out today. I bought a nice little black and white number (maybe I'll make a special birthday post tomorrow, just so you can see it).

I imagine that the day is only going to get more exciting, as it is far from over. Yip! I don't want to jump the gun on wellness, but it's so invigorating to not be curled up in bed waiting for the next hacking fit.

On to the clothes!

No fear: guest blogger

On Tuesday, the roommate of awesome, E., was inspired to try a no fear day of her own. She says she rarely wears this wide-lapeled blouse because it seems too dramatic or too fussy.

I think paired with a simple cardigan and belt, it looks just right.

No fear nohow , E.! Thanks for playing along!

Guest blogger: hiking edition

The B/C changeover has a new guest blogger: please welcome M!

The last time I went hiking I saw two French girls at the summit, and they were just speaking French and rocking these aMAZing outfits of, you guessed it, leggings with cutoff denim shorts. My first thought was, what are those girls wearing?! My second thought was, why didn't I think of that?! So when S asked if I wanted to go hiking, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to try out this great outfit. Admittedly, I was getting fashion inspiration from teenagers, but I think it is okay since they were French.

The hiking outfit was surely a hit, functional and good for bringing me constant humor. Also, I'm fairly certain other hikers appreciated the outfit as I seemed to be getting many double-takes.

Hiking boots: Montrail via Farm Way
Socks: Smartwool via Farm Way
Tights: Kohls
Cutoff denim shorts: pants inherited from the cousin of a friend
T-shirt: Poker Flat Research Range welcome center (closet)
Rain Coat: Marmot via REI

M., we salute your fashion adventurousness! Good for you for challenging yourself to take risks.

wedding!

For the past four days I haven't been blogging because I've been with my family on Cape Cod, celebrating a very special occasion - my mom's wedding! Yesterday afternoon my sister officiated and I played photographer in a very small, quiet ceremony at my aunt's home. So, as a special treat, I present one of my style icons: my sister C!

To make my summer-wedding dress more fall appropriate, I stole yet another trick from academichic and tied the sash around the outside of my cozy purple cardigan. My sister autumn-ized her summer dress with a mustard cardigan and pumps, and we both chose gold jewelry.

At the wedding, my mom gave me and my sister each a picture of my grandparents on their wedding day - when my grandfather was on leave from the Navy in WWII. My mom's new husband scanned the photo and spent hours restoring it in Photoshop. It's a memento that I will cherish for a very long time.

Congratulations Mom! We wish you and your honey every happiness.

On me:

Shoes: TJMaxx
Earrings: JCPenny's

On my sister:

WCC: E's Fourth Day

So being a completely lazy bum, I didn't take pictures today until I shanghai'ed B to do it at 11pm. Hence the baggy eyes. You can see my fancy purple leopard print socks if you look really closely, haha. I like the shape of this top, since I see a ton of undergrads around campus wearing checked tops, but this one actually leaves me feeling not like I'm 16 :). I felt pretty good about this outfit all day, even though I look pretty tired in the photos :).
Day 4: Jeans, Black shoes, black and green checked top
Jeans: remixed, Lane Bryant
Black and Green Checked Top: Forever 21
Black shoes: remixed, Payless

WCC: E's Third Day

Aaannnd.. Sometimes you don't. So, the idea for today was, "on the run, no fuss, fast easy, matches accessories," (Again, with the matchy-matchy, I know). I wore this outfit for the entire day, and looking at the pictures now, I'm kind of embarrassed. The pants are actually fine, particularly when not performing amazing feats of slanted balancing (B is definitely superior in her slanty balancing skills), but the sweater on the other hand, is just not making me very happy. The shape is off, and the high beams are dazzling, and apparently shiny, which is just absurd, particularly as I taught a class today. Also, the material of the sweater, which though it feels good and breathes nicely, also clings in sadistic ways. Ah well, win some lose some. It's a shame too, since I was totally seduced by that neck line in the first place.
Hopefully tomorrow will paint a less lumpy picture.

Day 3: Purple sweater, black pants, pendant, purple shoes, black hoop earrings

Caption: Me, pleading with the heavens for a less lumpy sweater.
Sweater: TJMaxx
Pants: New York and Company
Shoes: Jessica Simpson via TJMaxx
Pendant: chain gift from grandpa, pendant from TJMaxx

WCC: E's Second Day

So happy day 2! I decided that since today was my "don't have to go to school day" that I would be as casual as possible, but I also thought it would be a good time to show off my jacket, that I recently bought, and love to pieces (not literally to pieces, I'm being very careful, I promise). The accessories are pretty matchy-matchy, but that's another thing I've learned about myself (I tend to do that-- a lot, haha).

This is pretty standard for me, a lightweight sweater, a pair of jeans, a pair of flats. The jacket makes pretty much everything fancier though, which I'm definitely fond of. Also, let's face it: I live at TJMaxx. Aieyi!

Day 2: Teal Sweater, Jeans, Leather Jacket, Purple Bag, Purple Shoes, pendant, diamond studs

Teal Sweater: Old Navy
Jeans: Lane Bryant
Leather Jacket: Wilson's Leather Outlet
Purple Bag: gift from mom, via TJMaxx
Purple Shoes: Jessica Simpson via TJMaxx
Pendant: chain from Grandpa, pendant from TJMaxx

WCC: E's First Day

Today is certainly a day for firsts for me! This is my first guest appearance, and also my first outfit for the Wardrobe Capsule challenge. I'll add in all of my items shortly, but here is outfit #1.

Please don't mind the neon white legs (no tights required, ha). I had to teach today, so I chose something that looked fairly professional but was very distinct from my Wednesday outfit, as my number one fear with this challenge is that my students would pick out that I was wearing something twice in one week. After wearing the outfit all day, I did wish I'd chosen something a little lighter, since it was sunny and beautiful... aka hot... I felt pretty resourceful when someone complimented me on my "skirt" during the day, since the "skirt" is actually a dress, though you can't tell because the sweater covers the top nicely. Like C, I decided to base my items for the week around a color theme, which is black, white, teal, and purple. Today is the least colorful of the days for the week. I longingly eyed a pair of chunky earrings this morning. I think that's the hardest part: I'm definitely an accessories whore.

Dress: TJMaxx
Shoes: Payless
Sweater: New York and Company
Earrings: Claire's
Scarf: TJMaxx
Day 1: Black Sweater, Black shoes, sparkly white scarf, black and white dress, diamond studs
