As I think you all can tell by the long radio silence, I am now gearing up for my job overseas and have been letting this blog slide. Honestly, between the end of my class, an orientation in Washington DC, and trying to get rid of or store everything I own in the next two weeks, documenting what I wear just hasn't been a priority. I think that indicates that I've gotten what I wanted to get out of this particular blogging experience. So here's a look back at why I started this blog and what I feel I've learned from it.

Reason #1: I wanted to push myself to be more creative with my clothing.

Result: I think this happened. I've played around with some trends and pushed myself to wear forgotten purchases. I also acquired a LOT of belts. I think more importantly, keeping a (somewhat) regular record of what I wore for a year has helped me to define my own style; I feel like I have a better sense of what I like and what I don't. I still have hesitations and wardrobe freak-outs, of course, but overall I think I feel better about how I look on a daily basis.

Reason #2: I was inspired by reading fashion blogs, particularly those belonging to other graduate students and young professionals. In these blogs I found a community of smart, funny, compassionate women with real bodies and real budgets who manage to dress well every day. I wanted to be part of that community in some small way.

Result: I have been so grateful for the kind comments and general support of other bloggers who have checked in here, and I have definitely enjoyed my time as part of this community (the challenges were especially fun!). But I've realized that my favorite bloggers simply put a lot more time and effort into their blogs: posting daily, keeping track of their pictures, hosting giveaways, linking, creating challenges, etc. I'm just not that dedicated.

Reason #3: I wanted to keep up a friendship with C, who was moving away, by using the blog to continue chatting about clothes and style the way we did regularly when she lived here.

Result: I think this worked at first. When C had to drop out of the blog, I missed the collaboration with her, and I think posting got a lot more erratic. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that even without checking in on each other's outfits regularly, we've still got a lot to talk about.

Overall conclusion? This was a good year-long experiment for me, but it's time to move on. I'll be going back to the sort of travel/life blogging I've done on previous trips. When I've got the new blog set up, I'll post the link here.

I bought these shoes on a DSW trip with C, when I raved about how sexy and yet comfortable they were. I think since then I have worn them...once. For about two hours. Why? The truth is, I do not know how to walk in this high of heels. I thought that owning these shoes I adore would force me to practice. Nope. They languished on the floor of my closet day after day as I headed off to teach in my sensible flats or low-heeled boots.

My general philosophy of clothing ownership is that if I haven't worn something in more than a year I don't need it (exceptions sometimes granted for fancy dress clothes), which means that as a person who has been moving every September for the past few years I've been good about getting rid of unworn stuff. And as I know prepare to either pack or sell or give away everything I own, I have to decide: should they stay or go?

After wearing this outfit, I'm leaning towards stay.

I cannot even describe how tall and glamorous and posh I felt in this outfit. I felt like a model. Seriously. Look, I even did my best Tyra Banks broken-down-doll pose.

On the other hand, I had to trade these shoes for flipflops just to walk to and from my car, so these shoes are definitely not coming overseas where I will be taking public transportation everywhere. I just don't think I can give them up. They make me so happy!

I've had these white pants forever - I got them in St. Petersberg and they always made me feel impossibly European and glamorous. Sadly, the hems were tattered and gray. So last week, out came the scissors, needle, and thread, and ta-dah! White capris!

I put this outfit on yesterday morning, and stood in front of the mirror waiting to hate it. I mean, bright blue with navy? What, did I get dressed in the dark?

But the longer I stood there, the more I thought...my waist looks small. I feel pretty. I am really comfortable. And I bet Chelsea from bright side dweller would wear this. So I kept it on.

Now I need you to tell me, honestly, does the blue on blue work for you? Would you wear a bright color with its neutral equivalent?

Yesterday in class, I was trying to explain the term "pink collar" to my students. I told them (correctly, as it turns out) that pink collar jobs were jobs in industries dominated by women, such as retail, secretarial work, and nursing. I said that this also included elementary school teachers. One of my students then asked, "So, are you pink collar?" That made me pause. True, ESL teaching is largely done by women (in fact, all four teachers currently working in my program are women). But damnit, I have an advanced degree. Then again, I suppose a lot of elementary school teachers do as well...

Anyway, I am asserting my white-collar-ness in this outfit.

Yesterday was the first day of a new class session. I have got a great group of students, very lively and fun, and the freedom to play around with the curriculum. One of the students asked why there were so many ping pong tables on campus, and I ended up explaining beer pong to them, complete with diagrams - on the first day! Don't say I never taught you anything, kids.

I usually go conservative on the first day (in my clothes, anyway...)

I think I shall dub this "the mullet belt". Business up front...

I loved this outfit - I felt so crisp and cool and polished, even in the nasty humidity. Yay for rediscovering silver accessories!

Eyelet + blue and white stripes + silver = very summery.

These sandals are pretty but they keep giving me blisters, even after several wears. Sad.

Only a few more days with this group of students, then back to my usual ESL group. I enjoyed these students but I dislike teaching test prep, so I'm looking forward to the switch.

Apologies for the lack of posting - it's been unbelievably hot and humid here, and while I would like to be one of those posh ladies who thrive on hot weather with cute sundresses and nary a frizz, the truth is that by the time I get home every day I am hot and sticky and my hair is a tumbleweed and I am not inclined to photograph myself in that condition. There have also been many vacation days of shorts and tank tops which are not worth blogging. So! I am hoping that the weather will cool down soon. Really really hoping.

field trip!

Today we took all the ESL students to a museum called the Strawbery Banke, a place where several houses have been preserved from different periods in New Hampshire's history, and furnished in historical style. It was pretty entertaining to watch my students try to tactiralk to the people wandering around in period dress, in character as people from history, and even more entertaining to watch the actors try to stay in character when dealing with my students! It was great to get out of the classroom and wander around in the sunshine chatting with my students - I feel like I got to know them as people.

When I'm going to see students but am not actually going to be teaching, I always want to dress down a little, to signal that this is a time when I'm not "on" and we can interact as equals.

Wearing shorts is always a bit iffy for me, as they often make me feel self-conscious. But taking inspiration from academichic and What Would A Nerd Wear, I added an embellished white top and a belt.

I felt polished but still casual - and I was super comfortable walking around in the heat. So...yaya shorts!

I enjoy wearing this skirt. I love the bright colors, I love the slight floatiness of it, and I love that people often ask me if I a) embroidered it myself (ha!) or b) bought it in Russia (Forever 21, ages ago). It's light and comfortable and the waistband never pinches. I've had it for several years - it's been to Russia twice and all over Southeast Asia - and is still in pretty good shape.

This week I'm going to try to pull myself out of this rut by wearing old pieces of clothing that haven't yet been seen on the blog. I think this jersey top fits the bill.

Yesterday was the most perfect Saturday morning: a long run before it got too hot, banana pancakes cooked by the boyfriend, and a trip to the farmer's market resulting in an all-local-produce lunch. Yay!

On Friday, I was trying to work my new white button-down into an outfit, and pulled this together:

I love the detailing at the top of this blouse but the cut is really boxy, so I tried belting with a scarf. Eh. Not amazing. At least I like the scarf and shoes together.

And THEN I realized it's basically just this outfit over again. Same skirt, same shoes, same scarf, white short-sleeved blouse. Lame.

I feel like I'm in a rut. I think it's partially the heat, which restricts layering, and partially that most of my clothes, including all of my skirts, are neutral colors. All of my color is in my tops, scarves, and shoes. Bah. I don't want to spend any more money on clothes - I want to get creative with the stuff I own. Ok, that's the project for next week.

Whew! After a slight mix-up with the plane tickets, J. and I ended up in Wisconsin until late Monday night...which made preparing for my Tuesday morning class a huge scramble! I was relying on tried-and-true repeat outfits while I was trying to catch up from being gone.

I spent the weekend in Pennsylvania with my family, taking part in a memorial service for my grandmother. It was a good experience, an opportunity to spend time reminiscing with people who loved my grandmother, and sharing a lot of wonderful memories. There was some travel drama (delayed flights, messed up car rentals) and I also squeezed in a 5K race. I'm glad I went, but man, it was exhausting. I need a weekend after my weekend.

For me, denim skirt + bright cotton top + neutral sweater + neutral shoes is a go-to when I'm rushed or sleepy. It's nothing especially creative but at least I felt pretty and presentable enough for teaching and meetings.

I picked up this very lightweight sweater on my hooray-I-have-a-paycheck-again shopping spree, thinking that it would be a nice polished option for teaching on the cooler days of summer.

I've really been enjoying this group of students. Our theme this week is food, so today we talked about their expectations for American food and how American food is different from Asian food. Food is an awesome topic for an ESL class - it is so deeply intertwined with culture, and everyone has strong opinions about what they like to eat!

I love this floaty white dress. I love the shaping in the bodice. I also love the deep v of the neckline, but I do a lot of bending over when I'm teaching, so I put a tank under it for modesty.

So this is actually what I wore last Wednesday. I love this shirtdress because it basically is an outfit on its own, making getting dressed super easy.

I brightened up the dark color with my absolute favorite scarf, and threw on my new favorite wedges for height.

Fashion blogging got shoved to the side the rest of last week as I had some serious decisions to make. I am proud to announce that next year I will be living in part of the former Yugoslavia, teaching English as part of a U.S. governmental program. Though it will be hard to leave, I think this is a great opportunity and I am excited for new adventures!

I found this super comfortable jersey dress at TJMaxx last week on a marathon shopping trip with my mom and sister. I am pretty much in love with it. I wore it under my cap and gown with black heels, and I teachered it up yesterday with a button-down.

I'm really starting to like my summer session students - 4 guys from China and one from Korea. In my experience teaching ESL, men from East Asia are often the most reticent to participate in class. A lot to do with the Asian conception of education, I think. But these dudes are quite lively, even funny. Hooray for students who surprise you. :)

The weather finally came down out of the stratosphere today, so I took advantage of the opportunity to wear a long-sleeved button-down.

It's not flattering - kind of shapeless sack, actually - but it made me feel just as confident as my most put-together work ensemble.

Camera woes

Sorry for the long silence - I've been traveling with my family for the past week, very unfortunately sans pictures as my camera's battery has been dead the whole time. Long story short, a new charger is on its way and I will be blogging again shortly!

The weather did not cooperate yesterday, so I featured my triceps...under a sweater and a coat. Oh well.

Today, I am featuring my calves. I've always done leg-intensive sports (ice skating, running, dancing, more running) so I've always been grateful for my legs and the hard work they do.

My legs are strong and healthy. They carry me across the ice, up hills, and across dance floors with style and aplomb. As I've been training for a 10K these past few weeks, I've been especially glad to feel my legs powering me through the miles.

Plus, they look hot in knee-length skirts.

So legs, I salute you (and knees, please hang in there!).

Today I turned in the last big paper of the year (sadly I had to ask for an extension for the two page book review. But after that I will be DONE!).

So this is what I wore for what should have been my last day as a master's student:

It is also the first day of Academichic's "Dress Your Best" week, in which we dress to accentuate the parts of our bodies we like. Side note: I am SO SO SO excited that this blog is mentioned on Academichic, even if it's only as part of a long list. You guys know how I feel about Academichic. Eee!

To begin "Dress Your Best", we are supposed to make a list of five things we like about our bodies. Here's mine:

1. My eyes. One's a little greener than the other, which I get from my grandmother.

2. My collarbones/upper back. I just think clavicles are pretty.

3. My triceps. They've always been well-defined - softball? Skating? Yoga? Who knows?

4. My calves. That's definitely from running.

5. My feet. I have cute feet.

Today I wore shades of blue/green and purple, to bring out the green in my eyes.

last day of class!

Today was my last ever class as a master's student. I can hardly believe it. It feels so strange to be cut free (well...almost free. Two more papers due Monday and THEN I'll be free!).

Hi everyone! In the past week, I have:

-had a major freak-out about my lit review and then finished it anyway;

-turned in one draft of my completed master's paper to my advisor and another to my second reader;

-gotten comments and revised accordingly;

-had a couple epiphanies about the nature of research;

-thought A LOT about going on to a PhD program...

-started training for a 10k race in June!

Now that the master's paper is under control, I am feeling a lot more relaxed about school. When I turn in my last seminar paper next MondayI'll be completely done with my master's program. How crazy is that?

While I've been doing all of the above, the weather has finally gotten warm around here - it's been in the 70's the past few days and muggy, with constant dire threats of impending thunderstorms...those might be coming true as I'm typing this.

And the outfit:

I was going for a sort of white-tunic-with-gold-accessories-Greek-thing-ish? Maybe? I was definitely comfortable in the heat (yay for floaty wrap skirt weather!) but felt appropriate for tutoring and a meeting with my advisor. So that's a win.

I had help with the pictures again today. That's him in the corner by the door.

My friend Rebecca, who throws the most awesometastic theme parties, had a "Canadian tuxedo" party on Saturday night - guests were encouraged to wear as much denim as possible. Now, growing up in Alaska, I always called denim + denim a Texas tuxedo. And some of the folks at the party who were from New York called it a Jersey tuxedo. Apparently, this outfit is named after whatever place you feel the need to mock. Go figure.

Anyway, the party was a smashing success, as much denim was in evidence (and a well-timed break from my descent into Master's Paper Madness!). I grabbed every denim thing I had in my closet and called it good, but Rebecca and several of her friends made a special trip to Goodwill, where they purchased the finest denim the 90's had to offer. To wit:

Hi folks,

Sorry for the lack of posting - I'm coming down to crunch time for my master's paper (and seminar paper - eek!). I've got a full draft due on May 1, and honestly, I will be glued to my desk and/or couch with laptop, books, articles, and transcripts until then. I spent all weekend in my sweats writing, and only bothered to get dressed again for work on Monday. I haven't given up on personal hygene yet, but I haven't been able to take pictures...I'll try not to disappear entirely, but please forgive me if I'm posting erratically. It's all in the service of becoming a MASTER.

One of my friends told me today that I looked "teacherly". Maybe it's the white button-down? Anyway, I like the adjective. And I was really hoping that this outfit would read a bit more grown-up than this previous version.

On Tuesday I had to give one more presentation on my master's paper at a mini-conference at my university. The awesome part? My dad and sister (and good friend S!) got to hear me present! I rocked the PowerPoint pretty hard, I must say.

After the conference my sister and I went to visit my aunt and uncle in MA. Their flowers are gorgeous!

And my sister helped me put together this outfit, which I was very happy with. She picked the high-waisted skirt, and she was totally right (pardon the dopey pose).

This shirt was one of the light summer tops I pulled out of the attic over the weekend. I love the bright color and geometric pattern, but with the overcast skies and chilly temps this morning (sigh) I knew I needed some layers. I usually think of this as a casual, with-jeans kind of top, so I decided to try to dress it up with some office basics.

I liked the overall shape of the tunic-ish top with the A-line skirt, and I liked the sort of unexpected twist of the modern top with the classics.

I am so, so wishing I could yank the top down a few inches in these pictures. Yikes.

The world is brimming with new life and rebirth, and with that, lots of happy color! I decided to follow suit and be as bright as crocuses, daffodils, and budding leaves. That said, my sweater was WAY too warm for the day. As B mentioned, it was at least 80 degrees yesterday (my car read almost 90), and the sweater was just a bit much. Still, it was for working, and I was inside an air-conditioned building, so it wasn't all that bad.

I like the way all the colors are working together. Normally I would put light blue and bright orange together, but here they are and I think they're happy as clams together.

P.S. I just finished a book, The Elegance of the Hedgehog, by Muriel Barbery. It's a little heavy-handed at times but quite good, and I actually liked the ending. I think I recommend.

Today, my friends, was GLORIOUS. It must have been 80 degrees. Time for more summer clothes!

As soon as I saw this pretty sparkley top in my Easter basket/box, I thought about tucking it into one of my summery circle skirts.

The timer went off while I was fussing with things, but I liked how the picture showed off the bell shape of the skirt.

Can I just say how much I love full skirts? They just make me feel so ladylike. With a hand-me-down scarf for a pop of color, This felt like an outfit my very stylish grandmother would have worn in the fifties.

I needed a cardigan in the morning, but by noon it was in my bag. Yay for the first really hot day of spring!

After feeling a weensy bit matronly yesterday, I decided to go full-on undergrad today and wear my skinny jeans, UNMITIGATED. No tunic, no boots, just skinnies. Eeek!

C's turquoise-fab outfit totally inspired me to bust out the bright spring colors. I layered a white tee under my summertime tank for warmth and modesty (I do have to tutor today, after all).

I ended up really liking the overall effect. I definitely felt young and happy and comfortable. In other news, I am also delighted to announce the return of my absolute favorite gray swing jacket!

Spring done sprung up here, folks - it hit 75 over the weekend and I got my first (minor) sunburn. Woo-hoo! I hauled my box of summer clothes down from the attic on Friday and rediscovered...my cropped pants.

Ok, so I am never quite sure about these pants. They were a pair of GAP dress pants that shrank in the wash to that dorky length that barely brushes the tops of your feet. So I got brave and hemmed them myself, an act of creativity of which I was extraordinarily proud. However, sometimes cropped dress pants read a little less fabulous and a little more, well, soccer mom. Today I tried to sass them up with a sparkley top, bright red shoes, and big hoop earrings, but I still worried. What do you all think?

boot bandwagon

So, I have these boots, and I'm pretty sure I haven't worn them since the capsule challenge of many months ago. I just fear that boots make my calves look big, as I have already expressed in previous posts. Still, I kind of like what's going on here.

This outfit is meant for work, though the corduroy skirt might be a tad casual for my work environment. I'm liking all the colors together: though I tend to think of jewel tones as fall-only, my last post and today's post both make use of them. It just goes to show that tealy/turquoise is a color for all seasons. As far as the casualness is concerned, I'm not that worried. The white button-up and sweater vest take care of that, methinks. The only thing I am worried about is comfort. I'm on my feet the whole time at work, bringing heavy dresses back and forth to customers all day long. I'll probably bring a change of shoe.

But, since B is basically obsessed with boots, I figured I'd give them another shot. I don't even hate the way they make my legs look, and I'm not sure if it's because I've lost a little weight since the last time I've worn them, or if it's because I just don't care as much about adding a little bulk to the calf area. Regardless, I like it all.

So, I have news for people:

-I've been very busy planning a wedding...for MYSELF. My boyfriend (now fiance, I suppose) and I decided that there was no time like the present for getting hitched, so we've been furiously and feverishly planning. We have a lot of it done, but still need some important odds and ends (a photog and dj come to mind). Still, that's exciting. The date: October 30, 2010. The jury is still out on whether Halloween costumes are encouraged at the party after the reception (it's a day wedding, the reception ends at 5pm. I say yes to after-party costumes, Pete says no).

-I still work at the bridal store, but I've had a few interviews here and there, so things are looking up a bit.

-I recently attended an open house at Simmons College for their GSLIS program. I just think being a librarian is my calling. The program seemed pretty good (it's a large program--over 800 students) but I still have more research to do on other programs throughout the country. I'm willing to move, so if anyone has any advice on that front, feel free to open up.

So, way before I was recovered from the first conference I had to pack again and go to the second (and hopefully, last) conference of the semester. I was worn out and not feeling creative so I packed all outfits I've worn before on this blog and liked.

I'm hoping to get back and track and do something interesting this week. If SPRING WILL EVER GET HERE ZOMG. I may need a theme week or something.

Can I just say how much I love wearing jersey dresses on the airplane? You guys. Here's what no one ever tells you: jersey dresses are basically nightgowns. They are awesome for traveling.

I felt so comfy (and so posh) all day. I am pretty much going to wear this outfit on every plane trip I take from here on out. Death to pinchy waistbands!

Sorry for the long silence, everyone - I've been attending my first ever big academic conference, including giving my first ever academic presentation! It was a whirlwind - my mind is still reeling from all the amazing people I met, the research I heard about, and so many ideas for what to do with my life after I graduate! I am completely inspired to get after my master's paper now that I've seen what other academics do with their work.

I'll be posting last week's outfits over the next few days as I recover from this conference and gear up for the next one, which starts on Thursday!

I wanted to remix my new denim shirt dress as a shirt by layering it under a skirt a la E. from Academichic. But when I had the dark denim and black on together, it felt altogether too dark, so I brightened up with some pops of bright pink!

I think this is one of the first ever outfits that won an unsolicited compliment from the boyfriend. Something about the proportions maybe?

Or perhaps the incontestable flirtiness of the flowy scarf around the waist...

The Easter egg colors I wore Sunday (and Monday, let's be honest) made me so happy that I wanted more. So, I grabbed the only other thing in my closet that's a true pastel - this swirly skirt dress you may remember from No Fear week.

I swapped out the black cardigan for a white one and dark red shoes for mustard ones, and felt perfectly ladylike and spring-y all day.

I also snuck in another double-tights wearing. The days of double tights are rapidly coming to a close.

Since I'd never been to a baby shower before, I was stumped trying to figure out what to wear to my friend's shower this weekend. I was guessing baby showers are the kind of thing you dress up for, like church. There's probably an equal number of old ladies in attendance. But then I didn't want to be too formal. This is what I came up with.

New springtime cardigan and some nice slacks and pretty flats. Unlikely to offend, I figured. I layered two white tank tops for modesty. And the belt made it feel more like me.

Turns out I hit the nail on the head - slacks and nice tops were definitely the dress code. I was glad to remember how much I like these sailor pants. The buttons are awesome.

I liked this combo so much I wore it to school today, with a gray belt this time to pick up the color of the shoes.

Pulled this black top out of the back of my closet this morning. I think it's been over a year since I've worn it, which is a shame, because the cut always makes me feel cute and sassy.

I tried for a bit of black and navy blue mixing, using my top and boots as the black and the sweater and dark jeans as the navy. Kasmira says using two pieces of each color makes the mixing look intentional.

I felt pretty good about it all day (especially with my gray and black scarf on), but looking at these pictures I wonder about the jeans and the sweater...they're either too close in color or not close enough, I can't tell. What do you all think?

This outfit was inspired by Tina's recent pretty outfits: the colors from this one with a little dash of the shapes from some others.

I had originally planned to wear just this long sparkley scarf, a la Tina, but it was really chilly out this morning. So I paired it with a pashmina for warmth. I ended up really liking the colors and textures together!

I was glad to squeeze in one more wear of my most ladylike wool skirt before it's time to pack it away.

shirt dress!

I have been looking for a shirt dress forever. I have probably tried on about a bazillion shirt dresses in every conceivable fabric. Mostly the problem is that if they fit my top half (i.e. none of that stupid gaping between the buttons) they're too baggy on the bottom. Does anyone else have that problem?

So I was awfully excited to find this denim-ish shirt dress on the sale rack at Target this weekend. It FITS! And is COMFY! If it had pockets it would be well-nigh unstoppable.

I was really impressed with the way E. from Academichic remixed her shirt dress three different ways, so I'll be trying all three of them over the next few weeks. I started with the most basic today: tights (doubled up for warmth), brown boots, and this awesome new brown belt I inherited from a friend who was cleaning out her closet.

I liked the way the different browns played off each other, and I can't wait to wear this dress again!

Ok, this rain is bumming me out. I had to scrap the outfits I had planned two days in a row for more rain-proof (i.e. galoshes-friendly) wear, and last minute scrambling always makes me fall back on basics. I think for next week I am going to finally get my act together and plan ahead of time, using the weather forecast!

My galoshes-friendly outfit yesterday was completely soaked by the time I got home, so no pictures, but I can tell you that it involved two pairs of tights and today I just could not bear the idea of more tights. So, jeans it was.

Since I had to bring a pair of flats with me to school, I decided to go for a bit of a skinny-jeans-and-tunic hipster-ish vibe.

On the plus side, I felt like the awesome Clare from Between Laundry Days would wear this outfit (at least, on a more casual day).

On the not-so-plus side, I ran into the head of the department in the hallway and felt really, really underdressed (eek!). I think I'll save this combination for weekends from now on.

After feeling a little schlumpy yesterday, I was craving something more posh. So I pulled out my only short skirt which was so nicely received the last time I wore it. To keep it professional I added a button down and a sweater vest.

Erm. I think the next time I am going for professional I will tuck in my shirt. The flapping shirt ends seemed all young and hip this morning, but by the end of the day...downtown to wrinkle town.

I also busted out two new pairs of tights, a gray opaque pair and a lacy black pair. Sadly, lacy tights are pretty useless as far as warmth is concerned. But hey, check me out, I'm pattern-mixing!

blades of glory

Inspired by the Olympics, I pulled my ice skates out of the back of the closet and went to the rink on campus this morning. I skated for years when I was growing up, and it was glorious to use those muscles again, to feel that glide and the freedom of zooming around the ice.

I needed an outfit that I could tutor in that also wouldn't suffer too much from being stuffed into a skate bag for a couple hours. Sounds like a long cardigan and scarf to me.

Also, I continue to be in love with these boots. Yes, they are somewhat impractical for the warm temps and resulting mud, since they are extremely flat and suede. I do not care. They make me feel cool.

the sneaky knot

So I do not own many crewneck shirts. I think they make me look short and squat and bulldozerish. I tend to stick to boatnecks and v-necks and turtlenecks. When I fall in love with a cruel, cruel crewneck, such as this lovely soft jewel-tone sweater, I tend to try to break up the neckline by layering it over or under something.

Yesterday I was substituting for another ESL teacher and wanted to stay a little on the conservative side, so once again I thought of this sweater and a pencil skirt. For a different way of camoflaging the neckline I tried the "sneaky knot" recently featured on academichic.

Results? Meh. The scarf didn't totally hide the neckline when tied this way, and the "sneaky knot" creates a lot of bulk down the front, which is kind of distracting for someone who waves her hands around as much when teaching as I do. It's also an impediment to good hugs. I do not think clothing should interfere with hugs.

Man was it windy this afternoon! And warm - all our pretty new snow is melting. Check out the wind tunnel effect on my hair. Cue the violin music! Some romantic cliche is about to take place!

The drapeyness of this cardigan also gets awfully interesting in the wind.

I did say something about being obsessed with gray and purple, yes? I like the brown elements mixed in too. A good outfit for a long day on campus of writing center and meetings and studying.

We finally, finally got some snow on Tuesday. So, hooray everything is pretty and white! On the other hand, boo, I got stuck taking my pictures inside, which is unfortunate because I was rather pleased with my outfit.

I wanted to wear this pretty purple jersey dress again and this time show off the pretty gathered sleeves and the line of the skirt. So I layered a button-down shirt under it and emphasized the empire waist with a belt.

I felt adorable all day. Also I am kind of obsessed with gray, black, and purple right now.

Happily, I got back outside for my pictures on Wednesday. The glorious sunshine reflecting off the new snow made me crave some lighter, brighter colors. A little orange, perhaps?

I had a presentation in class yesterday, so I used the button-down-and-belt combo to keep the skinnies-and-boots combo from looking too undergrad-y. And with a heavy pair of wool socks inside, these brown boots were surprisingly snow-worthy.

Today's outfit is a slight reworking of this outfit - easy, comfy, with a splash of bright green to keep me cheerful.

I switched to a shorter cardigan to show off more of the color of the top, and grabbed my new gray and black scarf to pick up the gray of the shoes.

Also, my nutty cat has been escaping out the back door when I come out to take my pics - today I caught him on film! Silly beast.

Ever had one of of those mornings where you have to be somewhere at 8:30 and you roll over and look at the clock and see that it's 7:45 and you overslept and you panic and run to take the world's fastest shower and throw on some clothes and then look at the clock again and realize you read it wrong and it's only 7? Yup.

Fortunately the day got better from there - I had a good meeting with my advisor and I actually got to help folks at the writing center today, which felt great.

Nothing too creative outfit-wise - just some cozy layers in my favorite color scheme. I wish I weren't so wrinkly, but otherwise I felt pretty and comfortable.

I ganked this awesome belt from my mom's belt drawer while I was home - it's from the 80's and is stretchy and suede-y.

Girls' movie night at my house tonight! It's part 2 of Pride and Prejudice, with tea and scones.

I really like the silhouette created by the tucked-in shirt and the open cardigan. However, with all that gray and black, I felt kind of dull, so I added a pop of red with my belt.

Inspired by today's comparatively warm sunshine, I decided to try a winter remix of this fall outfit, adding leggings, knee-high boots, and a scarf. It came out a little cowboy, but I'm ok with that.

This writing center job is going to be all about casually professional, and I think a button-down with a denim skirt fits that aesthetic well.

I loved the way the rich tones of the scarf played up the deep purple of the shirt, but since I suspected it would be warm in the writing center (I was right), I also wore a necklace.

So, as you may or may not have noticed about me, I pretty much wear the same pieces of clothing over and over again. Maybe it's a comfort thing, or maybe I just need some new clothes. Either way, this black sparkly cardigan has been enjoying a lot of play lately. I just really, really like it (the material is really stiff, and it has this fantastic sucky-inny quality that makes me feel as though I'm wearing Spanx on my arms), and at the risk of looking like a disco ball, I decided to pair it with another black sparkly item i have (clearly, this is how i play out my dolly parton/bedazzler fantasies).

Because I do not promote wearing an entirely black outfit (I've done it, of course, but save it for funerals! Life's too short), I added a punch of electric blue. This skirt comes in handy when I don't know what else to wear, because it makes it look like I totally knew what I was doing. Plus, it's just fun.

I did get a number of compliments on the outfit yesterday at work, and I'm not sure if it's because I rarely wear skirts, or if it's because that's how people masked their dismay at my being so...shiny. I'll just take the compliments as compliments and leave it at that. :)

P.S. these shoes are new from a Target clearance rack. I think they are precious with their tiny little wedgey heels.

Ahhhhh these pants are eating my foot!

No, not really.

I'm sure you all are very relieved.

I'm starting to get to that point of winter where I'm a weensy bit bored with the colors of my winter clothes. I was tidying up my bureau the other day and this pretty teal top caught my eye. I tried to winterize it with some good solid basics and a matching scarf.

I have to say that I am still not sold on these pants. They are just so...wide. What do you all think? Keep or donate?

packing challenge: wrap-up

So having had some time to reflect (ok, a LOT of time to reflect - I am lazy sometimes, what can I say?) here are my thoughts on the packing challenge:

I brought waaaaaaaaay too much stuff home with me. I packed things I didn't even wear - partially because the occasions I had imagined (New Year's on the town) didn't materialize (stupid head cold), partially because my home town is even more casual than I remembered, but mainly because I acquired a ton of new clothes while I was home. Which often happens (um, thanks Mom!).

For a reminder, here's what I brought.

And here's what I learned:

1. Pack no more than one of each kind of thing. I.e. one short cardigan and one long, not two. One pencil skirt, not two. One pair of neutral-colored heels, not two. One party shirt, not two. One pair of neutral dress pants, not two. One turtleneck, not two. I had to force myself to switch up and wear all the multiples I brought, which means I could easily have done without them.
2. This rule doesn't apply to button-downs - I wore all three of those multiple times - they can layer under or over tops and dresses.
3. It also doesn't apply to layering tanks and long-sleeved tees- I wore all of the ones I brought with me, especially since it was so cold.
4. Pack versatile pieces that can dress up or down - my plaid tunic got an awful lot of wear both at the office and on weekends. On the other hand, I wore my sweater vest zero times, because I packed a short-sleeved sweater that served essentially the same function and was more fun to remix.
5. Pack more underwear and socks. Because those I did run out of more than once. And being out of clean underwear is lame.

None of these lessons are ground-breaking, I know, but I do think this was a good exercise for me personally. Anyone have any other packing tips they could share?

The next packing challenge will be in March - packing for (gulp!) an academic conference!

I've recently discovered the delightful What Would A Nerd Wear (clearly the best blog title ever). I like her style, but I think even more I like how honest she is about the process of fashion blogging - some days, it's hard to be creative, or you're not thrilled with an outfit, and that's real. I like real. And when this recent outfit caught my eye, I thought I would try a hand at recreating it.

So this...is the shortest skirt I own. I've had it since, oh, late high school, when I was more comfortable with skirts above my knees than I am now. But with two pairs of thick tights for coverage and the rest of the outfit pretty demure, I actually felt appropriate for a series of meetings on campus - and surprisingly warm! Two pairs of tights + wool skirt = very happy legs, even in the biting wind.

Oh wait, did I say demure?

Hello! I freaking love this belt. I also did some more braidy goodness. (I fixed the bobby pins after the photos.)

So, my mom has what my sister refers to as Google-fu. She is a professional investigator and she can find anything on the internet. I mean ANYTHING. My sister's work once got mentioned in a newspaper article in the Philippines, and my mom found it. Before anyone from her work did.

Fortunately for me, my mom trained her Google-fu on Ebay and found me these gray suede Steve Madden boots that I have been wanting for a while and utterly unable to find in my size in any store. And she got them for $20. How sweet is that?

Of course, I had to put them on right away with my new purple dress (more purple for you, Tina!). They are so WARM and COMFY and slouchy and COOL I am in love. Eeeee!

I brightened up this muted dress and cardigan combo with my red scarf, which I do believe makes me eligible not only for Scarf Month at Academichic but also for Kasmira's Red Hat Society experiments. Yay!

Hmm, looking at this pictures I believe I will wear this cardigan unbuttoned henceforth. It's interfering with the lines of the dress. But OMG the booooooooooooots!

Today was my first day of work at our school's writing center. I was only going to be observing, so I wanted to keep it casual and unobtrusive. And I cannot stop wearing this pretty, drapey gray cardigan my mom gave me.

Then I remembered this lovely outfit from E. of academichic a few weeks ago. I am continually impressed by the way E. can make a simple, casual outfit look luxurious by mixing neutrals and using sophisticated shapes.

My mustard top wasn't warm enough for the chilly temps today, so I swapped it for a peachy long-sleeved tee. Then I added a little touch of purple in my earrings.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go inside and get warm!

I was a bad style blogger over the latter part of this trip (does anyone else find taking blog pictures harder when you're staying at someone else's house?), but I did take a few quick pictures of my road trip outfit. Jersey dress, sweater tights, and flowy cardigan with minimal jewelry = ultimate comfort when confined to a car, at least for me.

Please pardon the messy hair and goofy expressions - it was a loooong ride back from New York.

I know this photo is dark, but I love the gathering on the back of this sweater. Keeps the whole effect from being too baggy, I think.

Today's outfit? Another replay of my old favorite: cardigan over a shirt. So simple, yet so perfect.

These pictures were taken in a rush, because I was going to be late for work. At least I thought I was. Once I got to the bridal shop I was informed that I had written my hours down wrong...I'm not working until 6 tonight. So, the photos were rushed for no real reason, but I'm glad I had some good daylight to shoot them in.

And I'm just going to say right here, right now: I have a pants problem. I do not know what it is, but I cannot find a pair of pants I like. These pants, which I like in theory because they are gray, and lightweight, and I like the detailing on the front, do not fit properly. NO PANTS (except jeans) FIT PROPERLY. I need tailor-made pants. The end.

This was my last weekend in my hometown, and I spent part of it at my family's cabin, playing in the snow with my dad and his dog.

So, I know this is not the most "fashion-bloggy" outfit, but I love all of the outdoor clothes I'm wearing in these pictures. I love the heavy warmth of this wool sweater and the easy comfort of the puffy vest, and I love that my hat and scarf were both mademade (my scarf was crocheted by my good friend!). These clothes make me happy, pure and simple, and at its heart that's what fashion is all about, right?

the sincerest form of flattery

One of the fashion blogs I regularly read is What I Wore Today, and I truly admire Kasmira's style - her absolute fearlessness and creativity. But precisely because she is fearless and endlessless creative (not to mention petite with an astounding closet), I usually have to content myself with merely sighing over her coolness.

However, a few days ago she posted this lovely outfit, and I thought, hey, that one I could maybe do.

Gray cardigan? Check. Knee-high suede boots? Check. Dark turtleneck? Check. I don't have a bright print dress like hers, so I wore a bright print skirt instead.

Then I borrowed some jewels from mom.

Presto, my conservative-office appropriate homage to Kasmira. I still like her version better, but hey, I tried something new, and that's exactly what reading other fashion blogs is supposed to inspire.

It's a rare day that I wear a button-up shirt without something over it. I know they look professional and all, but professionalism goes right out the window when the world can peer through the pucker-holes and see what color your bra is. Usually I need to buy a size or two up in order to keep the bust in check. To me, it's not really worth the effort.

I love this shirt because it fits perfectly. I'm not thrilled about the color because it can be hard to match it with stuff (a problem of saturation, usually), but I just like that it's not waving around like a flag about my waist. It's a fitted shirt that actually fits, and there's definitely something to be said for that.

So, I felt pretty happy and confident in it all day. I've had it for a couple years, but I try to only take it out once every one or two months, just so I don't get sick of it.

The problem with this outfit is the pants...gahhh they are such a problem! I like the color, and I had them hemmed so they would be just the right length, but they have wide legs, and I just think it makes my short legs look shorter. I think the two items make a good pair because the fittedness of the shirt offsets the bagginess of the pants, but there's just something about these pants that always annoys me. Thoughts on where to get better pants/what to do about pants you want to like?

These are the black pants I thought were too big, rescued from my consignment pile. It turns out they're not actually the wrong size, just a really wide-legged cut.

They're such nice fabric and so exactly what I want in every other respect that I am going to hang on to them for now and see if I can make the wide-leg-ness work (I think it's going to require fitted tops). Which means no more pants-shopping! Wooo!

Today was my grandmother's 84th birthday, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins (though definitely not all of them) came to celebrate at our house. I got a big slow cooker for Christmas, so I took the opportunity to make some boiled dinner (big chunks of stew beef, turnip, potato, carrot, and onion with some water and vinegar). Because it wasn't boiled, but slow-cooked, it came out even better than usual. The meat just melted in your mouth...I was proud. Everyone else seemed to like it, too, so that made me even happier.

Because it was a day when you stay home, enjoy the company of family, and don't really step foot outside except to take out the occasional garbage bag, I found this outfit extremely fitting. A big chunky sweater layered over a casually sparkly tank, a pair of jeans (augh, they're getting chub-rub holes...time for new jeans), all together with my new slippies, and that's one comfy birthday suit (almost as comfy as the original "birthday suit"). I've worn these slippers every day since receiving them at Christmas, and I just think they're the warmest, comfiest things I own. I might have chosen a slightly different color scheme for myself, but Pete has pretty good taste.

The one thing I wish I had was a nice big brown belt to go over the sweater. I think it would have tied it all together and made it look more sophisticated. I could have also worn a scarf, but (and this was really my train of thought) I didn't want any stew juice dripping on it.

All in all, I'm pretty happy with it.

Please pardon my sad, tired little face. I look more frazzled than I am. These photos were taken at the very end of a very long day, and I am tuckered out. But just for S.V., I included a boob shot.

The debut of the skinny jeans! I'm playing it safe (and warm) by covering up with jeans and a longer sweater, but I think so far I'm a fan.

Not quite sure yet what to do with this new gray drapey sweater. It's a really soft, lightweight knit that's angled long in the front. It came with waist ties which I couldn't make work, so I cut them off and used my black patent leather belt.

I'm looking forward to experimenting with it!

Today's outfit is composed entirely of stuff my mom has given me (thanks Mom!), most of it in the past two weeks. My mom is awesome, and generous. There goes my packing challenge!

And, inspired by C (welcome back!!), I wore my puffy vest today. I was a veritable snow bunny.

These fuzzy gray tights are super warm and cozy but have a very unfortunate tendancy to creep down in the crotch. There is nothing like Baggy Crotch Syndrome to make one feel unsexy. I think it's because I sort of feel like I'm waddling. Anyone have any good solutions?

I overslept today and so I had to get dressed in a hurry. The black shirt/purple tank/denim bottom combo is one that always works for me when I can't think of anything else.

I think next time I'll go with black tights though. Now that I'm looking at the picture the gray ones are a little too blue too wear with this skirt.

I also didn't have time to shower, so I put my hair up in some quick French braids and twisted the braids into a bun. I really liked the way it came out from the back. (Please excuse the end-of-the-day fuzziness.)

My wonderful mom also took my shopping after work today and I nabbed some great boots and (gulp!) my first ever pair of skinny jeans. You'll be seeing them on casual Friday!

After a very busy holiday time, I'm back (again?). I seem to have some blogmmitment issues. Ah well. I'll talk about today's outfit first: lovey lovey love love. Mostly just the sweater. I bought it at New York and Co. a couple days ago and I just love everything about it. I don't have anything this color blue, and the flower detail is just so wonderful to me. I used Christmas money to buy it, so I consider it a Christmas present. I also like how it compliments my dress; I wore it to work today and it was a big hit. I don't usually dress up that nice for work (nicer than I usually would, but actually, I think I look better in my jeans than I do in my black work slacks) and end up looking kind of shlumpy, but this made me feel professional and put-together.

The first one above is a photo from a wedding I attended on New Year's Day. I am the only one wearing a print. While I admire my printy verve, I do think the dress makes me look kind of tubby. Especially next to all those well-dressed thin people. My hair was originally down, but we were dancing a lot and I was getting rather warm so I put it in a pony. In the mirror this dress looks a lot better than it looks in pictures. I think.

As for the other pictures, one is an example of my usual work-wear (baggy black work pants and an ill-fitting shirt) plus a brand new scarf, and the one with the vest is pretty much what I look like every day that I'm not dressing up for work or for the blog, haha. Turtle-neck, long-sleeved shirt, and a vest, and I'm good to go! It's been COLD here, but I do hate to be constrained by a coat when I'm driving. Ah. More to come on Friday. :)

Ever since I saw this outfit on Between Laundry Days, I've been enamoured with it. I love the silhouette, the colors, and the mix of casual and dressy. So today I tried my hand at recreating it. (Please imagine that I am wearing my black Mary Janes, which I have been keeping at work.)

For my first day back at work post-cold I wanted something super easy and comfortable. Jersey dress? Yes please.

This dress is probably the most comfortable piece of clothing I own. It's got great button detailing on the empire waist. The only thing I'm not sure I love is the neckline, so I usually layer it over something or add a scarf.

I'm having a hard time finding a good location for pictures inside. I'd love to be outdoors but A) it's freezing out and B) it's pitch black when I get home from work. So, some living room experiementations are in order.

I've been laid up with a horrible head cold for the past several days. I finally felt well enough on Friday to head out to Burlington with my mom and snagged these awesome suede boots!

Since I was still recovering, I lived in some version of this comfy outfit all weekend - a couple of layered tees, a long sweater, leggings, and these sweet wool socks I found in my mom's drawer of seventies clothes!

Fortunately I had my dad's huge fluffy cat to keep me company. She's a pretty good nurse.

Over the break I've been lucky enough to get my old office job back for a few weeks to save up some cash for next semester. The work can be dull, but the people in this office are absolutely wonderful, which more than makes up for it.

Here's my Responsible Young Office Worker outfit:

My one pair of nice pants, a soft sweater, a button-down for crispness, and a belt to add polish. Please pretend that I am wearing my black mary jane heels, which I wore all day at the office.

I'm looking forward to seeing how many different office-appropriate combos I can get out of my one suitcase!

Christmas Eve camel!

I hope everyone had a very relaxing and enjoyable holiday! I've been bumming around in jeans and comfy old sweaters for a few days, baking and eating and opening presents and eating and walking in the snow and...eating. But I did get all dressed up for Christmas Eve services at my church.

The day after I got home, my mom and I headed out to Target (one of the forgotten perks of being at home - my mom loves to take her daughters shopping!) and I found this beautiful green sweater dress on the sale rack. Hooray! Super warm and cozy, and I felt so pretty with this ruffle and the ladylike tie at the waist. Thanks Mom!

Yes, I am wearing red and green. If you can't dress like an elf on Christmas Eve, when can you?

My church has huge wheely camels for the nativity play. I thought they were magical when I was a kid, and frankly, I still think they're pretty awesome.

packing challenge

UPDATE: Of course, the minute I post this, E. from Academichic totally puts me in my place. I'm in awe.

I will just admit it: I am not a good packer. I start out with all the best intentions of packing light and efficient, and then I start to get nervous about all the situations I might encounter and all the things I might need, then I start making elaborate plans (well if I wear the boots under my pants then I could bring these flats to go with skirts but they don't go with this skirt...) then I get worn out and just bring everything. Which is how I end up barely squeaking in under the 50 pound limit for a one-month trip home. It's humiliating.

I would like it to be known that I once spent two and a half months in Southeast Asia living out of a backpack and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It was liberating. Now I'm that girl at the airport who can hardly lift her own mondo suitcase of clothes. Lame.

Anyway, I am taking this trip as an opportunity to reflect on how I can become a better packer. My goal is to figure out at least five items I could have done without.

Let's start with what I brought:

The trip: one month at home in a very cold climate which will include three weeks of office temping, casual nights with friends, casual and moderately dressy holiday events, plus some outdoors activities

Bottoms, shoes, and accessories:

Pants: 2 pairs of jeans, 2 pairs of dress pants (gray and black)

Skirts: 1 denim, 1 corduroy, 1 black, 1 fancy print

Dress: 1 gray knit

Shoes: black heels, gray heels, leopard print flats (not pictured)

Accessories: 1 red pattern pashmina, 1 plaid square scarf, 3 belts (brown, black, red)

Tops:

Button downs: white, burgundy, plaid

Cardigans: white, purple, black

Sweaters: black and blue turtlenecks, purple short sleeved, heavy green hoodie (not pictured), purple sweater vest

T-shirts: black, green, red long-sleeved, black long sleeved (not pictured)

Fancy: satin button-down, silver tank top

Not pictured: underwear and socks, pjs, workout gear, layering camisoles

So this is what you'll see me wearing (and re-wearing!) over the next several weeks. When the trip's over I'll do an assessment and see what I could have left behind.

finals week wear

This is basically a retread of Sunday's outfit, but featuring this pretty cloth belt (a good alternative to my occasionally pinchy leather belt, since I was taking a final last night and didn't want to worry about potential pinching).

Once I pulled out this belt, I decided to try a monochromatic look with several different shades of blue. Easy, comfy, plus I got a winter wear out of this blue tank top.

Hope all those calming blues helped me pass the exam!
